AASECT Sex Therapy Supervision

Designed for Clinicians Working Toward AASECT Certification as Sex Therapists

Supervision Overview

​The AMARE Institute Supervision provides high-quality clinical supervision aligned with AASECT certification requirements. It supports both standard and 10-year-experienced pathways and integrates ethical, inclusive, and evidence-based sex therapy practices.

Eligibility Requirements for Supervisees

  • Enrolled in or graduated from a master’s or doctoral program in a mental health field. Begin supervision only after graduate school enrollment and engagement with clients. 

  • Hold an active AASECT membership at supervision start and maintain it throughout

  • Begin supervision only after graduate school enrollment

  • Have a signed supervision contract with the AMARE Institute 

  • For 10-year track: Provide verifiable documentation of 10+ years of clinical sex therapy experience (~20 hrs/week)

A. Standard Certification Track

B. Experienced Clinician Track

Group Supervision Structure

1 Supervisor

2 Supervisors

Up to 4 supervisees

Up to 8 supervisees

30 minutes per person (90 mins for 3 people)

30 minutes per person (150 mins for 5 people)

Group supervision focuses on clinical casework, ethics, countertransference, and skill development. Supervisees are expected to attend group supervision with questions and/or case consultations.

Didactic components may be included as supplements; when provided, these hours count towards Sex Therapy Knowledge Areas.

Required Written Summary
(for Certification Application)

All supervisees must prepare a comprehensive narrative summary including:

  • Theoretical orientation in sex therapy

  • Couples therapy models used

  • Service delivery settings (clinic, telehealth, etc.)

  • Case types and populations treated (e.g., trauma survivors, LGBTQ+, OCSB)

  • Teaching, training, and lecturing experience (if any)

  • Relevant training or certifications completed

  • Membership in professional organizations

All supervisors at the AMARE Institute:

 

  • Are AASECT Certified Sex Therapist Supervisors (CST-S)

  • Sign formal supervision contracts with each supervisee

  • Offer constructive, ethical, and culturally competent feedback

  • Maintain confidentiality and boundaries

  • Provide a Supervision Endorsement Letter if requested for certification

  • Use supervision sessions to explore:

Supervisors

o    Clinical skills and case conceptualization
o    Ethics and scope of practice
o    Sexual development, diversity, and systemic influences
o    Supervisee’s professional identity as a sex therapist

Supervision Schedule (18 Months)

Month Supervision Schedule
  • Individual supervision will be scheduled through the AMARE Institute's administrative team.​

  • Group supervision will occur every second Monday at 1:00 PM MST (2 hours for 4 attendees), scheduled to be provided by the AMARE Institute. Supervisors must sign up in advance to secure their spot. NOTE: Dependent on group numbers, the administrative team may schedule additional group supervision meetings; schedules to be provided at that time.

 

Flexible pacing allows for alternating between individual and group sessions monthly.

Psychologist

Evaluation & Completion

Supervisees are evaluated on:

  • Clinical readiness

  • Case conceptualization

  • Cultural and sexual diversity competence

  • Professionalism and ethical standards.

At completion, a Final Supervision Summary and/or endorsement letter will be provided (if criteria are met).

Supervision Rates (valid for 2026)

Individual and group supervision rates are subject to review and possible adjustments at any time, as deemed appropriate by Amare Institute. 

 

The 2026 supervision rates for EXTERNAL supervisees who do not receive any other supervision from Insight Psychological Inc. and Amare Institute aside from AASECT supervision are as follows: 

 

  1.  Individual Supervision: CAD $240 per hour

  2. Group Supervision: CAD $120 per hour


The supervision rates for INTERNAL supervisees who currently have a service agreement with Insight Psychological Inc. and are receiving clinical supervision from Insight Psychological Inc. for other programs aside from AASECT, will be in accordance with their current clinical supervision arrangement with Insight Psychological Inc.
